The science fiction genre is really very vast as well as interesting. There is no limit to your imagination and one can present almost anything he or she can think of to bamboozle the viewers. However, in science fiction, we the director keeps his thought much closer to technology, but that too is enough to show you a new, future, or alternative world, something that you might never have even thought of before.

When we were small kids, almost all of us wondered about how the next century is going to be and we will be seeing flying cars around and what not. But we have seen nothing of such sort till now. But with the advancing technology and growing knowledge, new sci-fi films bring forward new concepts that will leave you speechless. And we have also seen several examples of this in the last few decades like Ex Machina, The Blade Runner, The Matrix etc.

Since there are so many science fiction movies out there, it is very difficult to rank he, as each one of them, have a completely different story and base. There is a high possibility that your favorite sci-fi movie might not be in our top 10 sci-fi movie list. But that is good, because instead now you would know another best sci-fi movie that you can enjoy with your family and friends tonight.

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey

No doubt, this movie tops the top 10 sci-fi movie of all-time list. 2001: A Space Odyssey was released in the year 1968, and the concept of the movie was way ahead of its time. The movie starts at the time of the dawn of mankind where people face the presence of a monolith alien, ultimately inventing a weapon (made of bone to kill it). Just after that, the movie jumps to the 21st century in a spaceship hovering over the earth. A scientist named Dr. Heywood Floyd is traveling to the moon to study a strange black monolith on its surface. However, the rock emits defining sound blocking their expedition, when the sun rays strike its surface.

Later, jumping ahead 18 months, we see two astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole in a spaceship, heading towards Jupiter. They are accompanied by three more astronauts which are in hibernation as well as a super advanced computer named HAL. But the computer tries to kill all the passengers to hide its error, but Bowman succeeds in defending himself. It is really interesting to see the journey into space as well as the advanced cinematography used in the film to offer completely new and outstanding experience to the viewers.

The Blade Runner is a science fiction thriller which was released in the year 1982 and was also a huge box office hit. The movie starts in the year 2019 with Harrison Ford playing the role of Rick Dickard, a retired police officer in LA. The future LA is full of dust pollution and especially replicants. Replicants are human like droids which possess very short life span and are really strong. These replicants were build to play the crucial role in off-world colonization. Rick was a blade runner before he retired, a cop who hunted rogue replicants, and is called once again to deal with four replicants that have escaped and reached the earth killing a lot of innocent people during the process. Deckard tracks and chases the escaped replicants discovering a lot of interesting facts before he meets the final replicant named Batty, on a skyscraper.

Alien is another outstanding sci-fi movie from Ridley Scott. Released in the year 1979, the movie focuses on a returning space crew who is invaded by an alien. The Nostromo’s crew is returning after a space mission when the mother computer of the ship wakes them up because of a strange signal coming from the nearby planet. A rescue team lead by Captain Dallas comes across a strange and eerie pod field where a mysterious organism attacks and attaches itself to one of the rescue member named Kane(John Hurt). The panicked team argues over taking Kane back to the ship but is resisted by Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). However, the science officer named Ash(Ian Holm) insists on taking Kane in and treating him. The incubus on Kane soon detaches themselves from his body and he recovers as well, but the alien escapes suddenly from his stomach into the ship. Later you see the alien stalking the crew members and a cat trying to kill them one by one. In addition to that the movie tag line became very popular among the science fiction movie lovers which said, “In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream”.

  1. The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back is the second installment in the Star Wars trilogy by George Lucas. However, you will have to watch the first Star Wars movie to understand the story of the Empire Strikes Back. Luke (Mark Hamill) who was a green-as-grass in the first movie has turned into a space warrior. His partners are Princess Leia and Han Solo are way more experienced than him on the battlefield as well as in dealing with the insidious Empire. This dark Empire is lead by Darth Vader (played by David Prowse). They all have “The Force” on their side initially and while returning from Darth Vader’s minions, Luke ends up in a couple of planets where he meets the wise Gnomish named Yoda. Before the movie reaches climax, the viewers are introduced to Lando Calrissian (played by Billy Dee Williams) who reveals a secret that hits both Luke as well as his opponent Darth Vader.

What if we tell you that the world you live in is not real, but a prison to contain your mind from seeing the reality? Well, The Matrix trilogy is based on the same concept is also one of the most popular and finest sci-fi movies that we have seen in last few decades. The first part of the movie was released in the year 1999 starring Keanu Reeves as Thomas Anderson, a computer operator with a lot of questions and dilemma in mind. Being a computer hacker, Neo (Thomas’s alias) meets Morpheus (played by Laurence Fishburne), who takes him out of the Matrix and brings him into the real world with current year closer to 2199. After coming to the real world, Neo finds out the huge AI network that has been developed by the machines to imprison the human minds so that they can use human bodies as batteries for an unlimited supply of power. At the same time, Morpheus believes that Neo is the one who can break the Matrix and free all the human population from being used as batteries and bring an end to the fight between them and machines in the real world.

Interstellar is an outstanding space film directed and written by Cristopher Nolan and released in 2014. The entire movie revolves around the dying earth and a space mission that is the only hope to save mankind from extinction. The movie features outstanding visuals, accurate space time theories, and an outstanding ending. There is an emotional element, drama, thrill etc. makes the movie even more enjoyable for those who are not much fond of science and space.

  1. Her

Her is one of the greatest and most heart touching sci-fi movie ever made. The actual theme of the movie is quite simple and it takes you on a lovely ride of self-discovery in sci-fi manner. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore and Scarlett Johansson (voice) as an Operating System. Samantha, the Operating system is an AI that seems almost real becomes a major part of Theodore’s life. Later, both of them fall in love with each other, but things change a lot when he finally realizes that he is in love nothing but a machine. At the same time, “Her” is a different love story with sci-fi element as its main essence that you should definitely watch if you haven’t watched it till now.

  1. Primer

Primer is a film for hard core sci-fi movie lovers. Also, we would like to add that the movie is really not for everyone. Primer is about two engineers who accidentally invent a machine that could send them back in time. But that is not all. Things become more and more interesting when they start using it, again and again, several times. Primer is a fascinating film that requires real brain storming to understand.

     9. Inception

Inception is another movie on the list by Cristopher Nolan. The concept of the movie opens new doors of imagination. Cobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) is a dream thief or someone who steals information from other’s mind or can even put an idea into other’s mind. Cobb gets an assignment to incept an idea into a person’s mind so that he can return back to U.S., back to his children.  The movie is backed up by Hans Zimmer’s outstanding music score. Things become more complex when they enter another dream inside a dream. The best thing about this movie is, more you re-watch the film, more you will understand it.

  1. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

E.T. is an adorable film by Steven Speilberg displaying a pure relationship between a child and an alien who gets left behind accidentally. The small boy Elliot is ten years old and his parent has recently separated. He becomes friends with the alien and their bond becomes stronger over time. The movie is not mind disturbing but is one of the classic sci-fi movie ever made and a sci-fi lover should definitely watch this masterpiece at least once in his or her life.
